Osnabrück’s political and cultural life believes in the maxim: "The task of peace committed to peace" (Stadt Osnabrück).
The Emperor Charlemagne founded the city in 780. During the centuries, Osnabrück developed into a cultural and commercial centre open to the world. The Peace of Westphalia, proclaimed in October 1648, finally ended the Thirty Years’ War and changed the face of Europe.
Today, Osnabrück is the fourth largest city in the German federal state Lower Saxony. Moreover, Osnabrück is surrounded by a nature reserve, the UNESCO Global Geopark TERRA.vita, with an area of 1,220 square kilometres.
