Communication Ecosystem in Motion

Ravinder Shergill

Principal Technology Architect
Chief Technology Office, TELUS
Edmonton, Canada

ABSTRACT

Communication Eco-System is in Motion at an unprecedented pace. This is driven by Consumerization of IT and Democratization of the Internet by Social Media, etc.

This talk will look at the following trends:

  • Services are becoming Access Independence
  • Wireline and Wireless network boundaries are blurring
  • Network Functions are being Virtualized
  • Infrastructure is becoming Software Driven
  • Cloud is making the Back-end Infra Common

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

As the Chief Architect, Ravinder is responsible for Strategy, Architecture and Governance for IP Networks at TELUS. In this role, he is Prime for the Roadmap and Evolution of the Converged Core and the Converged Edge Networks that deliver Consumer, Enterprise and Partner services across both Wire-line and Wireless Access Networks. He has 25+ years of experience in Network Operating Systems, Switching, Routing and Data Infrastructures. Presently, he's leading the Next-Generation Topology of TELUS' Network, leveraging IPv6, NFV and SDN technologies.

Beyond Cyber-Physical Era: What's Next?

Prof. Sajal K. Das

Department of Computer Science
Missouri University of Science and Technology
Rolla, Missouri, USA

ABSTRACT

We live in an era where our physical and personal environments are becoming increasingly smarter as they are immersed with sensing, networking, computing and communication capabilities. The availability of rich mobile devices like smartphones have empowered humans as an integral part of many cyber-physical systems. This synergy has indeed led to what is called "cyber-physical-social convergence" exhibiting complex interactions, interdependencies and adaptations among objects, devices, machines, systems/environments, users, human behavior, and social dynamics. In such a connected world, almost everything can potentially act as information source, analyzer and decision maker. This keynote talk will present some of the emerging research challenges and opportunities in the world of cyber-physical-social convergence. It will also reflect upon the fundamental question: "What's Next?"

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Sajal K. Das is the Chair of Computer Science Department and also Daniel St. Clair Endowed Chair at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla. During 2008-2011, he was a Program Director at NSF in the Computer Networks and Systems Division; and during 1999-2013 he was a University Distinguished Scholar Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and founding director of Center for Research in Wireless Mobility and Networking at the University of Texas at Arlington. His research spans theory and practice of wireless and sensor networks, mobile and pervasive computing, participatory sensing, cyber-physical systems and smart environments, distributed and cloud computing, security and privacy, biological and social networks. He has published extensively in these areas with over 500 research articles journals and conference proceedings, 49 book chapters, and 5 US patents. He has coauthored three books — Smart Environments: Technology, Protocols, and Applications (2005); Handbook on Securing Cyber-Physical Critical Infrastructure: Foundations and Challenges (2012); and Mobile Agents in Distributed Computing and Networking (2012). A recipient of the IEEE Computer Society's Technical Achievement Award for pioneering contributions in sensor networks and mobile computing, Dr. Das has also received nine Best Paper Awards in prestigious conferences like ACM Mobicom 1999 and IEEE PerCom 2006. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of Pervasive and Mobile Computing journal, and Associate Editor of several other journals including IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing and ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks.
